Kale, Smooth German

  • $4.00

Description

Brassica oleracea

Extremely rare annual kale goes to seed the first season.

This annual kale doesn't need to overwinter to flower and make seeds, making it an exceptional variety for aiding the seed sovereignty of areas where overwintering kale can be difficult. Our grower John Caccia stewarded this crop for several years in Ketchum, Idaho, and says it has the most delectable flavor of all the kales he's grown, with supremely tender leaves perfect for fresh eating. The elongated spoon-shaped leaves are less jagged than Red Russian, but with a similar delicateness. The variety was donated to the Seed Savers Exchange by Irene Kemper, whose great grandparents brought the seeds to the United States from Germany.

Seeds grown by Rich Felton in Rawlins, Wyoming.

175 seeds.

Directions: Start indoors and transplant out in spring, or direct seed in spring or later. For a fall crop, start indoors late May & transplant out quickly.
