Pepper, Gatherer's Gold

  • $4.00

Description

Capsicum annuum

Superbly sweet yellow-orange roasting pepper, prolific, early-ripening and decently sunburn resistant.

The story of Gatherer's Gold is a cool one. Breeder Frank Morton was trying to de-hybridize another beloved hybrid red sweet pepper at the request of some market farmers he was working with when out of the dehybridization process came a yellow off-type. He worked with that line separately for years, eventually stabilizing Gatherer's Gold, which is a wonderful prolific roasting pepper with sweet, bright-flavored flesh. Skins are thick enough to roast, but not so thick as to make them too tough for fresh eating. They're also fantastic for frying! Open-pollinated.

Seeds grown by Greentree Naturals in Sandpoint, Idaho and Affinity Farm in Moscow, Idaho.

30 seeds.

Indigenous people in modern day Mexico domesticated chiles from their wild crop ancestor the Chiltepin thousands of years ago, adapting it into so many unique and delicious varieties. When the European colonizers came, they took chiles back to Europe, referring to them as peppers because of their spicy flavor, which reminded them of peppercorns. Now chiles are beloved and cultivated by cultures all over the world, and despite the devastating legacy of colonization, the descendants of their original seed stewards continue to persist and cultivate them today. Sweet peppers are a relatively modern concoction, but one we are very grateful for!
