Join Snake River Seed Co-op for a two-day Seed School!

This lively event will feature loads of hands-on seedy activities, ample seed saving education, wonderful connection and conversation with fellow seed folk, and superb local food on a gorgeous urban farm!

WHEN: Saturday & Sunday, July 20th-21st, 8am-4pm (dates fixed, times still in flux)

WHERE: The Farm on Hill Road, 5298 Stinger Drive, Boise, Idaho 83703

The Farm on Hill Road is a historic 3-acre urban agriculture oasis in northwest Boise. Businesses on site include Draggin' Wing High Desert Nursery, Earthly Delights Farm, Flowers With Rye, Snake River Seed Cooperative, and Knapp/Cox Apiaries, and it is also home to co-housing and several home and community garden plots, among other intriguing projects.

As you're planning your summer activities, pencil in a trip to Boise for a weekend of rockin' seedy fun!

Modeled on the Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance's excellent Seed Schools, this shortened version takes place on a beautiful urban farm that houses five separate and complimentary agricultural businesses. Join us for two jam-packed days of inspiration around the timely topic of seeds and how to successfully save, steward, protect, and share them in your own community.

Topics covered:

  • Seed saving 101
  • Simple plant breeding for gardeners and small farmers
  • Models for sharing & distributing seeds
  • History of the seed commons
  • Plant reproductive biology
  • Flower & seed dissection
  • Hands-on squash hand-pollination
  • Isolation techniques for urban/diverse garden seed saving

  • And so much more!

Additional tidbits:

-This event is taught by urban farmer and seed saver, Casey O'Leary, who has over 10 years of experience as a farm-based teacher

-Participants are welcome to camp on the farm free of charge. Boise is home to a host of hotels, couchsurfing hosts, and Airbnb options for those who don't feel like camping. We have access to well water and a composting toilet, but campers will need to bring their own camping gear.

-Folks are welcome to bring their own food and beverages

-Saturday night will feature a campfire & seed swap. Instruments are always welcome!

-Meal plan includes lunch & dinner on Saturday + breakfast & lunch on Sunday. Vegetarian and gluten free options will be provided. Catered by the fantastic Brenna Heron using oodles of locally-sourced food!

Scholarship Information:

One of our core values is amply valuing producers for their time and expertise, and our registration pricing for seed school reflects that commitment. However, we recognize that we all are of different financial means. We encourage folks with the means to consider sponsoring or partially sponsoring a seed steward who cannot afford to attend. And if you are in need of a partial scholarship to attend Seed School, please email Casey at info@snakeriverseeds.com, and we will consider requests for financial assistance on a case-by-case basis.
