An amateur plant breeder's dream tomato!

Big Hill Tomato was bred by Utah seedsman Joseph Lofthouse to be early maturing, highly promiscuous, and delicious! The fruits are extra large and bicolored with intermixing yellows and reds. Lucky for us, the taste is as vibrant as the color! A protruding and sturdy stigma makes this tomato an excellent choice for amateur plant breeders who want to breed their own tomato variety. Our grower William Schlegel loves this tomato for its flavor, its adaptation to our climate, and for the ease of cross pollination. This variety is determinate.

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well. One of Big Hill's parents was Jagodka, a Russian cherry tomato.

This variety was pledged as "HX-9" to the Open Source Seed Initiative by Joseph Lofthouse.

Directions: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant out after. Bury past first set of leaves, add eggshells to soil for calcium, and provide support.
